T-ctonic Coffeshop

An architecture competition of an info center and a coffeshop loking towards a volcanic crater in Iceland.

The coffee shop is located facing towards the majestic view of Hverfjall

crater. The visitors who visits the area first arrives to a ca park which is 20

meters far from the entrance. Like the erecting volcano at the background, the structure grows from the

ground with it’s surrounding. By this way the coffee shop is either missed nor dominate the natural beauty of the upcoming view. With the big opening that cuts the sloped structure visitors can easily spot the entrance of the building.

The main focus of the project is to embrace vernacularity by the tectonic

structure of the building. 3 volumes that are intersecting gives us the clue of how Iceland and the volcano was created thousands year ago; collision & endless intersections of tectonic plates that lies deep under the soil.

Irregular shape of the structure allows different perspectives in every perspective from the exterior view. The skylight that lights up the exhibiiton stairs provide natural lighting during the day. The wood cladding at the exterior softens the sharp edges of the sculpture-like building.

System with trusses allows huge spaces interior without showing any sign of strucutral elements. This allows the structure to support “naturally created” concept. Truss system is used withing the slanted volume in order to support the load without any visible distraction.

Cafe spot is where the visitors can experience the mountain view while enjoying a cup of coffee. Granite coffee bar material refers to volcanic material. Tectonic movement can be felt interior while transitioning the spaces by the intersection of “plates” (volumes). The structural movements are exposed in interior with basic white colour since it directs the visitor to the exhibition area. The stairs supported with the sloped void which also mimics the mountain creation, ends up at the bottom which Mareo Rodrigues’

Melt 7 installation exhists. Atmosphere of the exhibition hall is lightened with “LAVA” like skylights, which washes the walls of the room
